I loes Ben Nevis

Halò Single Malt Mates,

I have owned two Ben Nevis expressions. Really guid drams. Ben Nevis is on the way from Elgin to Glasgow. A guid distillery tour.

I have just run into a very interesting Ben Nevis.

Here it is:

Ben Nevis
20 Year Old Edinburgh Whisky Library

Details
Producer Edinburgh Whisky Ltd.
Age 20 Year Old
Bottle Size 70cl
Alc. Volume 46%
Bottler Independent
Region Highland
Vintage 1996
Country Scotland

Description
This Ben Nevis was first laid down in 1996 and left to mature for a full 20 years. It has now been carefully selected to join Edinburgh Whisky Ltd.’s Library Collection of single malts. A full, rounded and deeply fruity malt.

Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Deeply resinous and fruity. Ripe nectarine and dark cherry through to mixed glacée fruit. Christmas cake. Liquorice. Praline nuttiness. Clove spice and newly-sawn wood develop into old furniture polish. Worn-out leather. Comfortingly (sweet) dusty old books. Feint oiliness / old workbench perhaps?
Palate: Weighty, broad and complex, but with great acidity. Tinned fruit syrup. Pannacotta. Toasted oak, mocha coffee and roast almonds. Dark maple syrup. Notably thick and chewy texture. White pepper spice at the end.

I always recommend a Ben Nevis. It goes really well with Creme Brulee!

I am gratified to learn that you enjoy learning about Scotch Whisky.

The best kind of Auld whisky!! Cheap, relatively speaking.

Halò Single Malt Mates,

Here is a cheap, relatively speaking, peatish 20 year old Highland whisky. Beam Suntory own a few distilleries. Their distilleries fly the US and Scottish Flags.

Ardmore 20 Year Old 49.3% 70cl

Description
The price of whisky has become quite the talking point in the past few years, but we’ve been blown away by the value for money from this new Ardmore. Aged for 20 years, initially in 1st fill bourbon casks and then in Islay casks to create a deep, full and zesty character.

Official Tasting Notes Nose: Butterscotch, toasted nutmeg and fig jam. With the addition of water, vanilla sweetness, stewed apples, subtle peat smoke and orange zest.
Palate: Lingering vanilla sweetness, crisp, dry smoky notes.

Anyone who likes smokey whisky probably will like this one. There is less peat seemingly in this one than in say Lagavulin or for sure Laphroiag.

“Whisky, drink divine!
Why should drivelers bore us
With the praise of wine
While we’ve thee before us?”

Och another sherry Monster

Halò Single Malt Mates,

This expression has been matured in American bourbon barrels and European oak sherry barrels. When I was in Dumgoyne at the Glengoyne distillery, I saw the difference in different oak maturations year by year.

Balblair

1990 46% 70cl

Details
Producer International Beverage Ltd
Bottle Size 70cl
Alc. Volume 46%
Bottler Official
Region Highland
Vintage 1990

Description
A long term favourite of our staff here at Royal Mile Whiskies . It is matured in a combination of American Oak ex-bourbon and Spanish Oak ex-sherry casks giving it a huge wealth of character and flavour.

Staff Tasting Notes
Nose: Freshly peeled oranges and pears. There is some expected raisin notes from the sherry influence but it’s still surprisingly fresh and citrusy. Notes of grapefruits appear once left for a while.
Palate: Very smooth, delicate dark chocolate notes move over the palate. Hot raisins with only some of the citrus character hinted from the nose.
Finish: Homemade chocolate cake, loads of cocoa. Stunning! Really balanced with its sweet and rich characters. Once again the citrus notes appear later but in a small amount, oranges and grapes in particular.
Comments: All you would want from a sherried Balblair, all that light fruitiness perfectly balanced with beautiful chocolate notes. Definitely one for a sunset!

Official Tasting Notes
Nose: The aroma is spicy yet sweet and is punctuated with notes of raisins, toffee and honey. Hints of vanilla, chocolate and citrus fruits are also present.
Palate: On the palate it is full bodied; sweet and spicy in character with hints of honey, raisins and zesty fruits.
Finish: The finish is smooth and long-lasting. .

Here’s tae the heath, the hill and the heather,
The bonnet, the plaid, the kilt and the feather.

Glenfarclas
15 Year Old 46% 70cl
£47.95
(Inc. VAT)
Details
Producer Glenfarclas
Age 15 Year Old
Bottle Size 70cl
Alc. Volume 46%
Bottler Official
Region Speyside

Description
Glenfarclas 15 is for many the best in the Glenfarclas range (and it is a very good range). Still a family owned distillery, they use mostly ex sherry casks to create a rich, spicy, oily whisky. Direct fired stills, which can give extra oiliness to the new make spirit. The warehouses are tradtional dunnage warehouses, which are so cold they offer very little spare spirit for the angels. Bottled at 46% Abv, as this was George Grant’s (current youngest generation) grandfathers favourite strength for it.

Staff Tasting Notes
Rich, fruity, raisiny and plummy. Hints of oloroso and PX sherry. A fruity burst and dash of oak on the finish makes you quickly want another glass.

Sounds pure dead brilliant to me. When we were there MO Clann and I saw George Grants’ hame on the distillery grounds.

A wee Macduff expression

Halò Single Malt Mates,

Macduff distillery markets its whisky under the name of the Deveron, and under its own name.

Here is the distillery:

Macduff

In 1958, the Macduff distillery was founded opposite Banff, by a syndicate under the name of Macduff Distillers Ltd, the group included George Crawford, Brodie Hepburn, James Stirret and Morty Dyke. A couple of years later production commenced and, over the course of the 1960s, further stills were installed, bringing the total to four. The Macduff distillery draws its waters from the Gelly Burn and lies on the east bank of the River Deveron in Banffshire. During the 1960s, Scotch whisky exportation increased threefold.

Macduff is presenting an 18 year old The Deveron for a pure guid price.

Here tis:

The Deveron

£69.95

Details
Producer Bacardi Brown Forman
Age 18 Year Old
Bottle Size 70cl
Alc. Volume 40%
Bottler Official
Region Highland

Description
Glen Deveron is made at the costal Macduff distillery. Macduff has five small pot stills which each have horizontal condensers. These unusual condensers help create this a easy drinking and light fruity single malt. This 18 year old expression is notable for its apple notes, dried fruits and nuts.

Official Tasting Notes
Smooth and aromatic – rich, creamy vanilla with notes of poached pears, apples and ripe mango, give way to gorgeous aromas redolent of a sherry infused fruit cake, plump with vine fruits and almonds.

This has the notes of sherry maturation and with shipping costs around 105 dollars.. a guid price indeed.
