Halo Single Malt Mates,

I loes my Highland Park. I do I do…

I have stumbled upon a new expression bottled by Gordon and McPhail. These bottlings  are always collectable because the bottler buys a cask from Highland Park  or another distiller and issues a single vintage bottling for sale. Thus the collect-ability. There will be no more bottles from the cask.

Single cask expressions from anyone are by definition collectable.

Usually, I decline to collect and instead share the collectable with my mates..For example I shall have a family Hogmany tasting and three of the expressions are collectable. That is the way it is these days…

As my personal guru, Ralfy of Glasgow says,”It’s your whisky do what you like with it.”

Here is the expression:

A 1989 vintage Highland Park from independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail as part of the MacPhail’s Collection. Bottled in its mid teens, this shows off the distillery’s classic lightly peated character.

As you can see this expression is 17 years old which is typical of an independent bottler. The Distillery will sell 15,16 or 18 year old expressions. i have owned all three and They were Sma-sin! Sma-sin, Smashin, Scots Gaelic for great or excellent.
Whisky, drink divine!
Why should drivelers bore us
With the praise of wine
While we’ve thee before us?”

Halo Single Malt Mates,

Your Humble Scotch Spirit Master and mo clann visited Glengoyne Distillery near Glasgow. It is the only distillery that distills in the Hielan and matures in the lowlands.

It is a privately owned distillery more or less and they concentrate on really guid whisky..

I had a dram of their 15 at an inn near the distillery and here is a new expression that i will try and buy next year.

Here is the new expression.

Glengoyne 21 Year Old
Sherry Cask

70cl / 43%

  • Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
  • Distillery Bottling
Glengoyne 21 Year Old / Sherry Cask
Special Offer
£10 Off!
+ Free UK Standard Delivery
(Was £110)
Web Exclusive Price £100 £83.33 ex VAT (£142.86 per litre)
Glengoyne 21yo is noticeably deeper than younger expressions, with delicious rich, fruity and oaky notes – the darker colour and long finish are testament to the extra years in the sherry wood.

Glengoyne distills very slowly, which produces a fruity, slightly oily new spirit, that is then filled in to mainly ex sherry casks, producing a rich dram. 21 years in cask develops all sorts of complex flavours in whisky. Get a bottle and find out more.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Toffee, sherry, spicy strudel and red apples.
Palate: Honey notes, sherry and oaky notes. And a dash of cinnamon. The finish is long, sherried and spicy

Here’s tae the heath, the hill and the heather,
The bonnet, the plaid, the kilt and the feather.

A h-uile la sona dhuibh‘s gun la idir dona dhuibh!

May all your days be happy ones!

A wee experiment in Drinking

Halo Single Malt Mates,

Mo Clann were over the other night and since the  Fall weather here in Sin City is like Edinburgh in the Summer,  I needed a cuppa to warm me up.

I added Dewars 12 blended grain Scotch Whisky to me coffee and it was great. I add blended grain Scotch Whisky to most all my mixed drinks. After all, I have standards to maintain..

Here is the recipe

For a coffee maker

Place four portions of four of your favorite different coffees in the machine. For example one portion would be Starbucks special Blend, the next could be Folgers. Whatever you like the most.

Next make the coffee and sweeten it with your fave. Like sugar or sweet and low etc. but not too sweet.

Next add heavy whipped cream to make a top and then add a jigger of Dewars 12. Or white or whatever blend you like.

Please don’t use a single malt because that wastes money which isn’t being Scottish.

Try it You will like it.

Here is to those who loes us or gives us a lift

Another wee guid pairing.

Halo Single Malt Mates

Since I had some more Lobster Bisque Left over I thought I would pair it with another sherried whisky. Boy was it good.

Here is the whisky:

Glenturret

Producer Edrington
Age No Age Statement
Bottle Size 70cl
Alc. Volume 43%

Description

Glenturret is often overlooked as a single malt as it was part of a portfolio that included blockbusters such as Highland Park and Macallan. Happily, the producers are looking to raise the profile a little. Their sherry cask edition has been matured in a combination of American & European oak casks which have all contained sherry before.

Official Tasting Notes
Colour: Deep burnished gold, clear and bright.
Nose: Homemade syrup sponge meets sweetness and warmth.
Palate: Puff candy layered with aromatic sandalwood and smooth, sweet spices.
Finish: Medium sweet, good length with lingering spiciness.
I suggest you try pairing sherried whiskies with lobster bisque

Here’s tae the heath, the hill and the heather,
The bonnet, the plaid, the kilt and the feather.

Ach GlenDronach!

Halo Single Malt Mates.

I loes me GlenDronach. I have purchased at least five bottles of the 18 Allerdyce over the years.

No Joke. I also love to pair it with Lobster Bisque. The sherried  long lasting finish goes great with the bisque. I just had some tonite with my lovely bride..

it just keeps getting better and better..

Here is the whisky:

Description

Glendronach is one of those distilleries that has an absolute treasure trove of heavily sherried whisky in its warehouse. The 18 year old is named after Allardice, not after a famous West Ham manager, but after the founder of the distillery, James Allardice. A man who originally chose quite a “different” route to market in the 1820’s in Edinburgh (he gave his whisky to the ladies of the night to spread the word).
Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Fudge notes, muscovado sugar, fruit compote, morello cherries and rich icing sugar.
Palate: Christmas cake fruitiness, dark chocolate richness, spicy notes, Oloroso notes, walnut bread and chocolate orange. Stunning
You can get lobster bisque in a good seafood restaurant…I get mine at the Red Lobster or believe it or not the Souplantation.

May you aye ha’e a copper to spare,

A wee guid pairing with smoked salmon

Halo Single Malt Mates,

i was sampling some smoked salmon and decided to see if a guid Campbeltown would fit  the pairing  bill. Actually it was quite pleasant. As I have already mentioned the whisky brings out interesting flavours in the food and the food brings out interesting flavours in the whisky,

Here is the whisky:

Absolutly blinding stuff, i am a big fan of springbank 10year, got this from my son
And his mate for a birthday present BINGO!!!!

Sadly I fear that this expression is long gone. I cawn’t find it at my usual UK online vendors.

Anyway a Glen Scotia does go well with smoked salmon. You should try it.

To the rapturous, wild, and ineffable pleasure
Of drinking at somebody else’s expense.
