A wee St. Andrews Day Greeting

Halo Single Malt Mates,

Happy St Andrew’s Day!

As we hurtle towards the festive season like a gift laden sledge down a snow crusted hill, lets not forget about Scotland’s patron saint, St Andrew. November 30th is his day and being based in Scotland’s capital we’d like to be the first to suggest grabbing a bottle and raising a dram to celebrate!

A wee Toast

20160924_195010

Whisky, drink divine!
Why should drivelers bore us
With the praise of wine
While we’ve thee before us?”

I would like to make a toast to lying, stealing, cheating and drinking. If you’re going to lie, lie for a friend. If you’re going to steal, steal a heart. If your going to cheat, cheat death. And if you’re going to drink, drink with me.

A h-uile la sona dhuibh‘s gun la idir dona dhuibh!

May all your days be happy ones!

A wee desert Whisky!!

Halo Single Malt Mates,

Even after all these years of tasting guid whisky, I run into something I simply don’t know. Like Tullibardine is a Highland Scotch Whisky and not an Irish Whiskey. Silly me.

Shows to go you that distilleries, who have to cover the cost of maturing Scotch whisky for decades, come out with exotic expressions that they hope people will like and buy. Like this one.

A wee Glenfiddich 12 pairing

Halo Single Malt Mates

I was watching American Football with Mo Clann and we paired it with Glenfiddich 12.  The Glenfiddich expressions I own go great with spicy food. Therefore we paired it with Pepperoni pizza. the pizza is a good kind of spicy.

So I heartily recommend you try it yourself. Glennfiddich 12 is almost always on sale and it is one of the cheaper single malts to purchase in the States. Nautally Pepperoni Pizza is everywhere. Well almost.

Here is the whisky:

Glenfiddich 12 Bottling Note

This classic Speyside from Glenfiddich was the Winner of a Gold Medal at the 2007 International Wine and Spirit Competition, aged for 12 years in American and European Oak casks.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Grain. Slightly floral, mineralic. Spirity, orchard fruit, malty, honey. Citrus develops.

Palate: Light, floral, spices. Very smooth.

Finish: Sweet, touch of oak and general fruit, oily.

Overall: Stereotypical Speyside. Consistent – a good benchmark.

What I like about Glenfiddich 15

Halo Single Malt Mates,

I have a nightly dram of Glenfiddich 15, The nose is spectacular and the palate and finish are great!!!

Anyway, in a past post I recommended some food pairings with this whisky. I have settled on two for your enjoyment.

It goes great with a spicy oriental dish called kung pao chicken and also with spicy cheese enchiladas!

They are the bomb.

So if you get adventurous try these two pairings

a wee collectable from Benriach

Halo Single Malt Mates,

Benriach has come out with and expression that has only 220 bottles and is indeed a collectable. I suggest you buy two because it looks great and will be very valuable. You will have to go to multiple UK vendors to get two.

Benriach 1977 / 37 Year Old / Dark Rum Finish / Cask #1891

£410 £341.67 ex VAT (£585.71 per litre)
A 1977 vintage Benriach bottled as part of the distillery’s 11th batch of single cask releases. This whisky was aged for 37 years, including an unspecified finishing period in a dark rum cask before 181 bottles were yielded in July 2014.

This dark rum barrel-matured BenRiach cask yielded a mere 220 bottles, so chances to grab one are very limited at this point.

Nose:  Deep, dark and complex.  Gorgeous light fruits in heavy, heavy syrup.  Marzipan.  Brown sugar.  Dusty grain and pressed flowers.  Rather spicy with a fleeting savoury note.  Toasted coconut.  Baked apple with caramelized sugars and spice.  Plenty of those ‘old whisky nuances’.  I LOVE this nose.  More and more, in fact, the longer I spend with it.

Palate:  Toasted oak top note meets dark caramel and old spices.  Strong oily vanilla notes.  A mishmash of dark fruits and dried tropical fruits.  Tastes very mature, without being over the top.  A fine balancing act that dries a little towards the back end.

Thoughts:  Softens the longer its left in the glass, and makes for a very meditative dram.

Description

Glendronach distillery is a firm favourite among Drinkmonger staff for their high quality whisky at a fair price. This edition is quite different, as their other releases aren’t peaty. Well worth trying, just to see how smoke affects their robust spirit.
Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Ripe goosberries dusted with cinnamon sugar and citrus. A delicate peat, charred wood character, freshly ground barley and toffee.
Palate: Oak spice, heather honey and barley sugar. Subtle peat notes and a slight bonfire note.

A wee bit of whisky fact

Halo Single Malt Mates,

When I was in Scotland we drove by the Clynelish distillery near Brora. Sadly we couldn’t stop, but we had other things to do.

Looking for a Clynelish I spotted an independent bottling of a Clynelish 16. Here:

Clynelish

Vintage 1998

Description

Clynelish is a great distillery, with nice waxy, fruity spirit that shows off a well-structured, complex and tasty house style. This edition was bottled by Signatory, who buy casks of whisky from their favourite distilleries and bottle them under their label, unchillfiltered and with no artificial colour.
Clynelish has had a strong connection with Johnnie Walker blended whisky for many years. A large proportion of the spirit used in Johnnie Walker Gold Label Reserve comes from this distillery.
