Sushi and a wee dram of Talisker

Halò Single Malt Mates,

Talisker 10 is an ubiquitous whisky. You can find it at every big liquor chain in the States and naturally in fine vendors like Royal Mile Whiskies and the Whisky Exchange in Scotland itself.
For a lark I decided to try some with sushi as well as smoked salmon which pairs extremely well with Talisker 10. The peppery palate and smooth finish go well with the fish…

Here is the whisky:

Talisker
10 Year Old 45.8% 70cl

Description
The Scots can be a hard headed, single minded bunch, as Talisker shows. Skye wasn’t the easiest place logistically to set up in the 1830’s, but they persevered, and now it is one of the most visited distilleries in Scotland, and one of the most popular Highland/Island malts. A nice peppery peaty dram.

Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Hot and heavy, with hints of dried cocoa leaves, castor oil and smoked chipotle chilli peppers. Pungent, smoked kippers and freshly ground pepper. Earthiness and peatiness arrive as the dram opens up. You find yourself being enveloped by it.
Palate: A burst of pepper and peat hit the tongue, followed by a sweet note. A note of ginger, and rich, layered and smoked.

I love pairing Talisker with meat and fish. It really brings out the flavours of the food..

Try it I think you will like it..

Description
The Campbeltown resurgence continues! We’ve managed to get our hands on this exclusive single cask of peated Glen Scotia and we couldn’t be happier with all 204 bottles of it. It’s smattered with pepper, fruit and, of course, a gentle smokiness, which all come together to form a delicious cask strength dram to be savoured. Act fast as we don’t think this one will be around for long!

.

Staff Tasting Notes Nose: A punchy nose, with great combination of iodine, smoke and swimming pools. Vanilla, but not over the top. Sweet baked goods and shortcrust pastry.
Palate: Short, powerful with a buttery pastry core overlain with oyster shells, swimming pools and iodine.
Overall: Caol Ila like at times, but a little grubbier and wilder.

Official Tasting Notes
Opens on a gentle smokiness, then some peppery notes, fresh cut barley, orange blossom, fresh natural vanilla alongside a delicious syrupy sweetness.

This whisky is a collectable. IF you want to get it…

A wee comparison

Halò Single Malt Mates,

Today, Mo Mhac and I shared two brill Eighteens. One was Macallan 18 sherry and the other was the Glendronach 18 Allardice

Here is the Macallan. It is no longer available in Scotland only in the US because of the Macallan sales strategy

Macallan 18 Yr Sherry Oak

Scotland Highland Scotch Single Malt

It is rich brown in colour and has an outstanding fruity palate and an amazing sherry finish..

Details
Producer Brown Forman
Age 18 Year Old

Description
Glendronach is one of those distilleries that has an absolute treasure trove of heavily sherried whisky in its warehouse. The 18 year old is named after Allardice, not after a famous West Ham manager, but after the founder of the distillery, James Allardice. A man who originally chose quite a “different” route to market in the 1820’s in Edinburgh (he gave his whisky to the ladies of the night to spread the word).

Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Fudge notes, muscovado sugar, fruit compote, morello cherries and rich icing sugar.
Palate: Christmas cake fruitiness, dark chocolate richness, spicy notes, Oloroso notes, walnut bread and chocolate orange. Stunning.

The 18’s had great palate and finish. It was a hard choice but we still like the GlenDronach better.

A wee sherried Longrow

Halò Single Malt Mates,

Cambeltown used to hae mony distilleries!! Noo, the region has only three.

By 2010 only three distilleries continue to produce whisky in Campbeltown: Springbank, Glengyle, and Glen Scotia. The Springbank distillery produces three distinct whiskies; Springbank, Hazelburn, and Longrow.

Longrow has produced a brill sherry it seems. I loes Cambeltowns and I loes sherried whiskies. Oh Joy

Description
These limited edition releases of Longrow are always popular and we’re sure this 100% sherry cask matured wonder will be no different! there are only 9,000 bottles available globally and we’re sure they’ll go fast. The smoky character of Longrow has worked wonders with the ex-Oloroso sherry casks.

Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Very fruity! Toffe apples, pears and strawberry chocolates, in the background; salted popcorn kernels mint leaves and honey.
Palate: Salty and coastal, the fruitiness continues with raisins, chocolate orange and prunes. A dryness develops with demerara sugar and digestive biscuit.
Finish: Drying BBQ spices; cayenne pepper and paprika followed by cinnamon sugar, oats, pecan nuts and the typical gentle Longrow smokiness.

You should try a Guid Cambeltown you might like it . Especially this one!

Benrinnes and sashimi

Halò Single Malt Mates,

My passion is pairing braw single malt whisky an guid food. It is well known that Single Malt goes great with seafood..

Single malt also goes well with chocolate. cheese, Chinese. steak, and many other foods.

It all depends on what you like.

As the wise man said, ” there is no such thing as bad whisky, only whisky that is better than others.”

Here is the star of the show:

Description
Located at the foot of the Benrinnes Mountain in Speyside. Benrinnes Distillery only really has one official bottling, and this heavily sherried 15 year old is it. Apart from that the majority of their production goes into blends such as Johnnie Walker, as the big and creamy nature of the spirit is loved for the weight it gives to a blended whisky.

Ths sashimi brought out the flowery notes and specifically oak notes in the tasting. It was very good…

Description
Only those that met a worthy death on the battlefield were marked by the ‘Valknut’ and taken by Odin’s Valkyries to the great halls of Valhalla to feast and drink; and to await the great battle of Ragnarok at the end of the world. This is the inspiration for Highland Park’s second release in the Viking Legends series, a slightly smokier release containing Tartan barley grown on their own shores of Orkney.

Official Tasting Notes
Nose: Toasted vanilla pods, cracked black pepper, oak shavings, cloves, aniseed, aromatic smoke.
Palate: Sweet, aromatic cloves join forces with tangy hints of aniseed.
Finish: Intensely balanced, bold and courageous, leaves a lingering memory of aromatic peat smoke and sweet spices.

A wee guid deal from Old Perth

Halò Single Malt Mates,

Old Perth Scotch Whisky was originally created in the early 1900,s in the city of Perth by the Thomson family, well known grocers in the City.

By the late 1970, a rationalisation , sadly, saw the brand disappear.

Brought back to life as a blended malt in 2013 by Morrison & MacKay as a celebration of Perth’s illustrious past in the whisky industry, the brand is the only whisky now blended in Perthshire .

Here is the whisky:

These intriguing releases from Old Perth have been proving mighty popular. This 1996 release is a blended malt from a single cask (yes, that is a thing) and is limited to a mere 326 bottles.

This expression is so rare that there is no tasting notes. Cawn’t afford them. a blended malt means there are more than one single malt whisky from different distilleries in this expression.
